Pediatric Exams

Children can have vision problems as we all know. It is imperative for children to have regular eye exams. Research has indicated that 5% to 10% of preschoolers experience vision problems. Further studies show that the figures could be as high as 25% when it comes to school age children suffering from vision issues. Diagnosing a vision problem early can be extremely important as children often respond better to early diagnosed problems.

It is recommended that a child have the first comprehensive vision exam of his or her life at around 6 months of age. Another eye exam should occur when the child is around 3 and then again just before starting first grade. Good vision is essential to the learning process, so make sure your child is free from vision problems before entering school.

Tips for Pediatric Exams

When scheduling a pediatric eye exam, request a time for when your child is usually happy and alert. As an example, some children do better at early morning appointments while others cooperate more in the afternoon. Be sure to fill out the medical history forms accurately and to entirety. Some problems or behaviors may be symptoms of vision issues, so alert the optometrist right away if you have noticed frequent rubbing of the eyes, excessive blinking, inability to maintain fixated while looking at an object and poor eye tracking. The optometrist also needs to know if the child was born prematurely or if you have noticed delayed motor development.
